Faith & Family Formation and the Restored Order of the Sacraments

The Restored Order of the Sacraments—celebrating Confirmation before First Eucharist—reflects the Church’s desire to return to the original sequence of the Sacraments of Initiation. This approach strengthens the unity of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist and ensures that children receive the fullness of sacramental grace earlier in their faith journey.

Faith & Family Formation supports this vision by helping families grow together as disciples and by placing parents at the center of their child’s spiritual development.

Families meet with their children on select Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:00 for Faith & Family Formation

Why the Restored Order Matters

Reclaiming the Church’s Original Practice

The early Church celebrated the Sacraments of Initiation in a unified sequence. Restoring this order emphasizes that Confirmation is not a “graduation,” but a vital step in becoming fully initiated into the Catholic faith.

Strengthening the Role of Grace

Receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit earlier equips children with spiritual strength, clarity, and resilience as they grow in a complex world.

The Role of Faith & Family Formation

Faith & Family Formation is designed to support families as they prepare for and live out the Sacraments of Initiation. This model focuses on:

Parents as Primary Catechists

The Church teaches that parents are the first and most influential teachers of the faith. Formation programs accompany parents, giving them tools and confidence to nurture their child’s spiritual life at home.

Family-Centered Preparation

Formation sessions, parish gatherings, and sacramental preparation experiences are built around the family—encouraging shared prayer, conversation, and participation in parish life.

Ongoing Discipleship

The Restored Order is not the end of formation. Instead, it launches children and families into deeper engagement with the Church through continued catechesis, youth ministry, service, and community life.

Safe Environment

Training for Clergy, Employees, and Volunteers

Safe environment programs are in place to assist parents and children - and all those who work and volunteer in Diocesan parishes- in preventing harm to young people. Age-appropriate safe environment training programs are taught in the Diocese of Tulsa.

The Diocese of Tulsa provides a web-based online training & background check program that specializes in helping churches and religious organizations create safe environments for children and youth. VIRTUS Protecting God's Children training and a State and Federal background check is mandatory for all Employees and Covered Volunteers who have access to children.
